This modification will change a non-downloading Delta control cable used with the S500/S550 control heads into a downloading cable for use with the S950/S990 control heads. It will require two pins to be added in one of the control head plugs and two pins to be added in the plug at the drawer unit end of the cable. Pins can be salvaged from cables cut up during de-installations. Check with places like New London Technology or Wolfe Communications for cut-off cable ends, as well as whole non-downloading cables.
Look for these two wires in the control cable:
- an orange with red stripe
- and a white with orange stripe wire.
If necessary, peel back enough of the black outer cable insulation to expose these wires. Tack solder a short piece of wire to each of these wires and put heat shrink over the connection. Solder a pin to the other end of each wire.
The proper plug at the control head end of the cable can by identified easily by looking for these wires that are present on that plug: orange with black stripe; orange with green stripe; yellow with violet stripe; orange with brown stripe; white; green; yellow; and a number of others. If you have these colored wires, you've got the right plug!
The pin from the orange with red stripe wire goes into pin hole #9. The pin for the white with orange stripe wire goes into pin hole #16.
That's it for that end of the cable!
Open the large black plug at the drawer unit end of the control cable. Locate the same colored wires you added to at the control head end and add short wires and pins to them.
The pin from the orange with red stripe wire goes into pin hole #36. The pin for the white with orange stripe wire goes into pin hole #29.
That's all there is to it!
I've successfully made this modification to many cables. The non-downloading cables seem to be plentiful at large swaps. I saw piles of them at Dayton this past year. This little trick makes it possible to use the downloading function of the S950/S990 control heads with the Delta drawer units.
